Founded in 1987, ABA was established by a Parent Teachers Association (PTA) with the support of the American Embassy, following the announced closure of the secondary section of Muscat English Speaking School. Originally known as the American-British Academy, the school was created to provide an internationally recognized education that combined the strengths of American and British curricula while enabling students to transition seamlessly to schools and universities around the world.

As ABA's community became increasingly diverse, the school evolved beyond its original dual-curriculum model. A defining moment came in 1999, when the Board of Directors chose to retain the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge IGCSE programmes. This landmark decision reaffirmed ABA's commitment to international education and established the foundation for the school's distinctive identity as a truly international school.

Following five years of curriculum review and development, ABA completed the implementation of all three International Baccalaureate programmes from early years through Grade 12. In 2004, ABA became the first IB World School in the Gulf region authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). During this period, the school also gained international recognition for pioneering the integration of the Cambridge IGCSE within the IB Middle Years Programme, collaborating with Munich International School and the University of Cambridge, and co-hosting an international symposium on curriculum integration in Muscat.

Much of ABA's growth and international reputation was shaped under the visionary leadership of Superintendent Mona Nashman-Smith MBE, who led the school through a transformative period until 2014. Her outstanding contribution to education was later recognized by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the award of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2016. 

Following an interim year under Tricia Herbert, Simon Taylor became Superintendent in 2015, leading a renewed focus on strengthening the school's mission, values, communication, technology integration, sports, the arts, and the continued development of excellence across all three IB programmes.

In 2019, Dr. Susan R. Groesbeck provided interim leadership during one of the most challenging periods in the school's history, guiding the community through the passing of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and the global COVID-19 pandemic. 

In 2020, Craig Williamson assumed the role of Head of School and led the successful transition to ABA's new purpose-built campus in Madinat Al Irfan. Opened in March 2022, the state-of-the-art campus reflects ABA's commitment to innovation, wellbeing, and future-focused learning, providing world-class facilities that continue to support a vibrant international community and nearly four decades of educational excellence in the Sultanate of Oman.
